Highlights
Orostachys spinosa (Meyer ex Berger): An incredible, distinctive succulent from Northern Eurasia that can handle super cold winters. This small rosette grows low and slow. Its muted green foliage takes on a sunflower-like form with a tight center and long outer leaves. This a great plant for demonstrating Fibonacci's Golden Ratio. It produces new offsets around its base to replace any that bloom and die.
Orostachys are easy, resilient plants that thrive outdoors with full sun and great drainage. Plant in raised beds or containers with drainage holes and mix 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite into the soil to prevent rot. Regular water will help young plants establish roots and spread quickly, but mature Orostachys can tolerate several months of drought. If you choose to propagate by hand, cut off a rosette and transplant it to re-root.
