Highlights

Lithops or "Living Stones": Rare mesembs from South Africa that are accustomed to full sun, rocky soil, and droughts that last several months. Only the very tops of the leaves are visible aboveground and even these are well-camouflaged in a variety of colors and patterns to blend in with the surrounding geology. This assortment of species tends to show vibrant pink, orange, blue, and green tones with darker, patterned leaf tops. They have deep taproots and need very little water and a well-draining soil in order to prevent their fleshy leaves from exploding.

Yellow or white flowers usually emerge in autumn followed by splitting to reveal a new, inner pair of leaves. The inner leaf pair get all the water they need from the older, outer pair. The soil must be kept dry to allow the outer leaf pair to wither and fall off. Lithops can be challenging plants to grow, but here are some pointers to help you along the way:

  • Transplant into a pot with a drainage hole. We recommend using unglazed terrracotta pots and only planting one Lithops per pot
  • Use gritty, well-draining soil, such as 80% mineral grit and 20% organic matter
  • Grow in full sun or on a very sunny window sill
  • Water in the fall and spring growing seasons, waiting for deep wrinkling before watering again
  • Do not water in winter or when a Lithops is splitting
  • Begin spring watering only when the older, outer leaves have shriveled into paper-thin sheets
  • Water very sparingly in summer ONLY if you notice severe wrinkling on the top; wrinkles on sides are a normal part of their annual cycle and not an indicator that they should be watered

For more information on this rare species, check out Lithops.info or our Guide to Cultivating Lithops.

Please Note: One order = one Lithops, though sometimes there will be additional, smaller Lithops in the pot. Lithops come in a variety of colors. You will receive one color, chosen by us.

Hello!

'Pink Butterflies' is fairly small in a 2" pot. It depends on what you mean by 'small' though. I've seen it be 3" tall inside a 2" pot. As far as diameter goes, it's probably around 2" wide due to its long leaves. I hope this helped!

will they propagate like mothers of minions ? See more »

That's a great question!

The pink plantlets on the margins of 'Pink Butterflies' leaves can grow into new plants, just like 'Mother of Millions' plantlets can, however, this process rarely works for 'Pink Butterflies'. The plantlets are just too variegated to take in light and most just die. However, if kept under 24/7 grow lights, I have heard that you can get a much better yield from these plantlets.

A more reliable way to propagate 'Pink Butterflies' is by cuttings, which you can learn about here. I hope this helps!

Hello there!

'Pink Butterflies' tends to keep all of its leaves. I think it's possible that you may be overwatering it.

Feel these lower leaves. Are they soft/squishy? Are they yellowish and a bit translucent? If yes, then reduce the amount of water your plant is receiving immediately. If it's just at this stage, then the damage shouldn't be too bad and, in all likelihood, it will recover.

Next, look at the base of the stem. Is it softer/squishier than the top part of the stem? Is it starting to discolor? If yes, then it's very possible that your plant has developed root rot. If this is the case, the situation is significantly more dire! I would recommend you do one of two things, if you detect root rot:

Good question!

The 2" pot listing of 'Pink Butterflies' comes with one rooted plant. This plant is roughly 3 to 4 inches tall and roughly 2 inches wide from leaf tip to leaf tip.

Yes. All plants in the genus Kalanchoe are considered to be toxic, including this one.

It can get nearly 2 feet tall and because of it's so good at propagating itself, it can get as wide as you want. Sometimes, even wider.

If they're grown in enough sunlight, they don't.

No. We don't call any Kalanchoe pet safe as some are mildly toxic to pets and people.

I plan to put them outside in a sunny location. See more »

They are! Just be aware that they're deer resistant because they're mildly toxic.

Also, please note that these plants cannot survive a hard frost.
