Highlights

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (pink bloom): An easy to grow houseplant with phenomenal flowers. It grows large, robust foliage with a waxy feel and scalloped edges. This variety has showy, prolific flowers of bright red that can last for many weeks and re-bloom throughout the year. It can grow into a small sub-shrub, reaching 18.0" tall and 20.0" wide at maturity.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need great drainage and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.

I measured a few of our specimens and they measured at roughly 7 inches tall. For greater reference, that pot in the picture is a 2 inch pot, so they're probably around 4 inches wide. I hope this helps!

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana has shown itself to be mildly toxic to cats.

K. blossfeldiana can grow indoors year-round. It will maintain its foliage as the blooms come and go. Mature plants tend to reach 12" to 18" tall.

You can! In fact, removing the dead flowers encourages the plant to produce new, fresh flowers.

It's safe to assume that all members of the genus Kalanchoe are mildly toxic, including this one.

I have a very small kalanchoe blossfeldana that I have planted in Shultz Catcus & Palm bagged soil. I feel like this soil stays too wet, despite only very minimal watering. The plant itself looks ok with a few blooms, but it is very small and hasn't grown much since purchasing. My question is, should I add more of "something" (sand, perilite, etc.) to the soil to help it drain and dry out more easily. Your website with the great pictures has been so wonderful for helping me identify other succulent that I have recently purchased. Thanks for your help.

You're very welcome! We try to be as accurate as possible with our ID.

I looked up some reviews and forums that talk about that particular soil and I find that people have the same suspicion as you do. It holds water too well to be a good succulent soil and people really recommend cutting it with something grittier. Perlite, coarse sand, or pumice should absolutely help. I've also heard of people mixing this soil in a 50/50 ratio with chicken grit or even aquatic plant soil for cactus, but Kalanchoe can take a bit more water so you may not have to be that extreme about it.

However, this may not be the only issue. You could try gradually moving it into more light to encourage growth. Fertilizing is also a possibility. If you go this route, I would recommend using a 1/4 or 1/2 strength fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season in the spring to summer. I hope this all helps!

You can cut them back and reroot the cuttings, however, your plant may need more sun. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana gets tall, but not 2'. This unusual size could be the result of the plant stretching to try and find light. Click the link below to read our description of stretching. If this sounds like your plant, it needs access to more light before you cut it down. Otherwise, it may not have the energy to sprout again.

These plants are rooted in a 2" pot.

If you scroll down on any of our plant listings, you'll find a section called "PRODUCT DETAILS". There, you'll find a list beginning with the item "COLOR - PRIMARY". Near the bottom of this list is an item called "PRODUCT FORMAT". That will tell you what size pot the plant ships in or what size plug if that's relevant.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is, mostly, a fuss-free plant that does well in many conditions. It needs a bit more water than other succulents so starting with a once a week watering schedule should be great. If it shows signs of water stress (wrinkly, flexible leaves) then you'll want to water even more frequently.

This plant likes partial sun and would do well in an east facing window where it can receive lots of morning sun but catch some shade in the afternoon. If you grow it outside, partial sun is very important as too much sunlight will cause the leaves to burn, like a sunburn in humans. In the winter, try to get it even more light by either placing it in a south facing window or shining a grow light on it. This will encourage the plant to bloom.

Any old succulent or cactus soil will work for this plant. You can even mix your own by combining soil and perlite (or just a coarse sand) in a 2:1 ratio.

Fertilizing is not necessary, but to encourage its gorgeous winter blooms, you can feed it in the winter with a dilute, balanced fertilizer.

Shop Succulent Soil Here

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.
