Highlights
Ox Tongue (Gasteria glomerata) (van Jaarsveld): Slow-growing, dwarf Gasteria with stacks of firm, tongue-like leaves. Each plant stays under about 3.0" wide and 4.0" tall, but they can produce numerous offsets and develop into an 8.0" to 12.0" cluster. Its fleshy leaves and deep roots help it tolerate hot, dry summers in its South African habitat, so be sure to plant in deep, well-draining containers and water sparingly. Ox Tongue can send up a tall bloom stalk, from which dangle multiple coral, tubular flowers.
Gasteria have low light and water requirements. They are one of the best types of succulents to grow indoors because they can tolerate low light conditions and still maintain their form and colors. Plant Gasteria in deep pots with drainage holes as they grow deep roots and will not tolerate standing water. Use a gritty, well-draining soil and water deeply, but only when the soil is fully dry. Protect from frost.
