Frailea castanea (Backeberg): A fascinating globose cactus with a sea urchin-like form. The plant is blue-green to chocolatey burgundy with 8-14 ribs and spines that lay flat against the stem. It remains solitary and produces large, pale yellow flowers. It can go to seed without opening its flowers, but hot, dry weather will encourage the blooms to unfurl. During periods of drought, the tuberous roots contract and pull the plant almost completely underground for protection. It is found in Uruguay and, to a lesser extent, Brazil.

This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Keep dry in winter.
