Highlights
Devil's Tongue Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus latispinus) (Britton & Rose): A flattened, globose barrel cactus with about 21 ribs at maturity. Both its names, "Devil's Tongue" and "latispinus" reference its broad, flattened red centrals spines. Its native habitat is in central Mexico where is grows as a solitary plant, reaching 12.0" tall and 16.0" wide. It tends to bloom in fall or early winter with violet or yellow funnelform flowers up to 1.6" long and wide. This plant is fully rooted in a 2.5" round plastic pot.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of temperatures below 40F, it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
