Highlights

Ferrocactus emoryi, commonly known as Emory’s Barrel Cactus, is a bold and formidable desert specimen admired for its robust, rounded form and striking spines. This slow-growing cactus features thick, ribbed stems that can reach impressive sizes over time, adorned with prominent, hooked or straight spines in shades of red, yellow, or gray, depending on the variety. In late spring to summer, it produces large, vibrant flowers in hues of red, pink, or yellow, creating a spectacular contrast against its rugged body. Native to the arid regions of the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico, Ferrocactus emoryi thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, making it an ideal focal point for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and collectors of hardy desert plants. Its dramatic presence and resilience make it a standout in any arid landscape or cactus collection.
This plant is fully rooted in a 3.25" pot.

This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Keep dry in winter.
