Highlights
Euphorbia polygona (Haworth): Green stems with sharp ribs lined with pinkish thorns. It develops into a cluster of columnar stems, closely resembling the unrelated barrel cacti. This species is native to South Africa and can produce lots of tiny, purple flowers.
PLEASE NOTE: Euphorbia contain a white, latex sap that can cause skin irritation or allergic reaction. Use gloves and eye protection to handle.
Euphorbia will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 75% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
