Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg'

Highlights

'Perle von Nurnberg' (Echeveria gibbiflora 'Metallica' × E. elegans) (Graessner): An old, classic hybrid that is well-loved for its pearlescent pink and purple tones that can shade to blue-green. Its leaves have an elegant curve to them and a coating of farina gives them a soft sheen. This cultivar earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

'Perle von Nurnberg' can grow to about 6.0" wide if given plenty of sunlight and great drainage. Pick pots with drainage holes and fill them with a gritty soil like cactus / succulent potting mix. It does need protection from frost but will grow well indoors if kept near a sunny window or under a grow light. Water deeply, but only when the soil is completely dry.

This variety grows easily without much maintenance but it is slow to produce offsets. Fortunately, it propagates readily from stem cuttings and leaves (more info).

Hello there!

We actually have two listings for Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg', a small one and a large one. This one, the small one, comes in a 2 inch pot and probably won't be much, if any, greater than 3 inches across. The large one comes in a 3.5 inch pot and the majority of those are 4 inches or more across.

Not in most climates. These plants will fully die if unprotected from hard frosts. But if you're in zones 9-11 and get liittle to no frost in winter, you might be able to keep it outdoors year-round. See full answer »

All Echeveria need lots of sunshine for healthy, compact growth and vibrant colors. Aim to keep it outdoors in full sun in frost-free weather, indoors on a sunny, south-facing window sill, or directly under a Succulent Grow Light that's on for 12-14 hours per day. You can keep them in window sills! Different windows will get different amounts of sun of course, but wherever you're keeping any succulent, the best way to prevent sunburn is to let the plant gradually adapt to brighter sun. Slowly move the plant closer to the window sill over the course of 1-2 weeks. Especially dry or unrooted succulents are more susceptible to sunburn. You can also periodically rotate the pot to even out the light exposure on all sides.

Identifying the many species and cultivars of Echeveria is notoriously difficult. We like to use a database called the International Crassulaceae Network (ICN for short) to help us identify Echeveria, among others.

Looking through the database takes a lot of time so you may find that it's not worth it. However, if your heart's set on a name, that's a good option for finding it. See full answer »

That's a good question,

There's a lot of variability to the sizes of plants. If we're talking just Echeveria in a 2" pot, I would bet that the plants themselves are roughly 1" tall and 2.5" wide. The leaves do go over the edge of the pot in many cases.

We also commonly sell plants in 3.5" pots and with these I would say that the plants are at most 3.5" tall and around 3-3.5" wide. These plants don't seem to go over the edge of their pots as often. I know this was rather vague but I hope it helps! See full answer »
