Highlights

Mexican Snowball (Echeveria elegans) (Rose): A truly elegant rosette with rounded, cupped leaves. This easy-to-grow species offsets freely and can develop into impressive clusters. The leaves are covered in a powdery wax called farina that protects them in full sun and gives a nice, matte finish. Full sun can also cause the rosette to blush pink. It blooms spring to summer with small, yellow and pink flowers on a tall bloom stalk. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" round, plastic container.

Echeveria need bright sunlight to maintain their colors and compact rosette form. They will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light.

Like most succulents, they need great drainage and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

Also known as "Mexican Hens & Chicks", Echeveria can produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons around the base of the mother plant. These chicks can be left to form a tidy cluster or removed and transplanted. Additionally, Echeveria can be propagated from stem cuttings or mature leaves. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for more information.

It's hard to say how fast it will take to trail, as that depends on many factors like watering frequency, light, soil quality, fertilizer and more. However, Sedum 'Burrito' is a quick grower compared to many other succulents.

Those particularly mature specimens on our website were submitted by customers, so we don't know exactly how many plants are involved. Burrito does tend to drop leaves and can quickly root from these leaves confusing the issue even more. However, two or three plants will do the trick if you have time to propagate.

Sedum Burrito likes to be on the dryer side, because it has quite chunky leaves that can store a lot of water. Grow it in gritty, well-draining soil and water deeply when the soil is completely dry and the leaves just start to feel flexible.

Should I water sedum burritos less during the winter? I'm in zone 9B in Pleasanton, CA See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Burrito grows the most in the spring and summer months and tends to go partially dormant in the winter. Although its water needs are reduced in the winter, it's still a good idea to give it a drink when its leaves start to wrinkle.

They can be grown in the same pot. They do well together because their care needs are nearly identical.

This plant does prefer a lot of light. However, you can explore our shade tolerant varieties by clicking the link below! We've also recently begun offering non-succulent houseplants by partnering with an excellent nursery call Little Prince Plants. They tend to tolerate shade as well.

That depends on your climate. This plant cannot survive a hard frost, so keep it indoors in a sunny window if there's a chance of frost. In frost-free weather, it can grow outdoors in part or full sun.

What are the accurate scientific names for both Burro's tail & Donkey's Tail? I know they are two different plants, but it seems like Sedum morganianum is used interchangeably for both. How do I tell them apart? See more »
7 days ago  •  Staff Answer
Yes, people use all the common names pretty interchangeably (and a lot of nurseries mix up the Latin names too), but technically the two scientific names are Sedum burrito and Sedum morganianum. S. burrito is the one with shorter leaves, and you can find both on our site with photos for comparison.

Shop Succulent Soil Here

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.

Our plants can be transplanted immediately upon arrival.
If you want to wait to transplant, they can remain in their original containers for up to a month. If the pots came in a plastic carrier tray, remove the pots from the carrier tray prior to the first watering.

Keep the plants indoors near a sunny window or outdoors under a roof (only if outdoor temperatures stay above your succulent's minimum hardiness temperature). Water only after the soil is fully dry by drenching from above with a faucet, hose, or watering can. Gently shake excess water from the leaves and allow containers to drain completely.
