Crassula x perforata - Ivory Towers

Highlights

Ivory Towers or Giant String of Buttons (Crassula × perforata): Tall-growing succulent with stacks of thick, joined leaf pairs skewered by a stem that grows up to 18.0" tall. Give it plenty of sunshine and its pistachio green leaves will take on a dark pink outline. Flowers with a tall bloom stalk with small, white blossoms.

This variety is distinguished from other members of the C. perforata complex by its large size and the thick coating of farina that can give it a powdery blue appearance. Planting tip: let this succulent go wild in a hanging pot for a beautiful sprawling cascade.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

Crassula x perforata is a hybrid between Crassula perforata and some other, unknown Crassula. No one knows who made the cross or if it's a wild crossing. See full answer »

How can you tell the difference between the two plants to know which one you have. The descriptions are the same. See more »

I think seeing these two next to each other would help more than a simple description so I grabbed them both from the greenhouse and snapped a photo. Ivory towers is on the left and string of buttons is on the right. Ivory towers has much larger leaves than string of buttons and its colors tend to be more distinct. By that I mean, there's not much of a gradient between the red leaf margin and the pale blue-green part.

String of buttons also has a thinner stem and more red spots on the leaves when compared to ivory towers.

Ivory Towers can't always replace missing leaves, particularly if it's lost the growing tip of the stem (the apical meristem). It can, however, sprout new branches, grow tall, and fill in over time in a way that does mask previously leaf loss. See full answer »

What succulents can I plant outdoors in Phoenix AZ? See answer

I'm trying to create a succulent garden outside, but I live in the Phoenix AZ area. I'm not sure which plants will survive in the middle of summer. Please help me! I don't want to create a beautiful garden for them just to die in summer.

They're going to be in direct sunlight most of the day. Which it's not bad right now, but as I'm sure you know. It can get up to 120 degrees out here.

So any help will be helpful.

Cactus, Agave, Aloe and most Crassula are going to be your work horses for this garden. They're beautiful plants and can survive in harsh sun and heat. However, due to spines or mild toxins, these plants don't tend to make good walk way plants. If your garden has a path running through it, you may want to plant these away from that path.

Some varieties that would work well near a path or an edge to your garden are Graptopetalum paraguaynse, Sedum rubrotinctum, and Portulacaria as they're more safe.
