Highlights
Small Red Carpet Stonecrop (Crassula pubescens ssp. radicans): A bushy, ground cover species from South Africa. This tender stonecrop has oval leaves that transition from green to red when exposed to bright sun. It grows well in-ground in frost-free climates, but it also makes a lovely (if greener) indoor plant. It tends to bloom in late winter or spring with clusters of tiny white blossoms that contrast with the fire red leaves.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
Crassula can show tiny white or black dots on their leaves. These are healthy, water-transferring pores called "hydathodes" and not a sign of disease.
This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.
