Highlights

Watch Chain (Crassula muscosa or C. lycopodiodes, aka Rattail Crassula and Zipper Plant): Unique branching stems of tightly overlapping, scale-like leaves. Both of its Latin names refer to its resemblance to a clubmoss. This plant starts off erect but eventually trails over with thick stems up to 1.0' long. It is native to South Africa and following heavy rain or watering it can bloom pale yellow to white flowers.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

Watch chain has very fragrant flowers. The flowers are tiny so most people don't notice it has flowered until they smell them. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until the flowers dry up. Sorry about that!

This plant ships rooted in a 2" pot.

If you scroll down on any of our plant listings, you'll find a section called "PRODUCT DETAILS". There, you'll find a list beginning with the item "COLOR - PRIMARY". Near the bottom of this list is an item called "PRODUCT FORMAT". That will tell you what size pot the plant ships in or what size plug if that's relevant.

It can. Cutting the tips of the branches off will encourage it to grow new branches.

A 2" pot.

For every product, you can scroll down to the Product Details where you'll find a field called Product Format that lists the pot size. Almost all of our pots are 2" unless otherwise listed in the product title.

It's important to note that Crassula mucosa naturally drops its leaves. Although underwatering can be a cause of this, it will do that naturally, even with proper watering. It's healthy, although unsightly.

This plant likes a lot of sunlight although it can acclimate to partial shade. I would give it 6+ hours of sunlight a day. So a sunny, south-facing window if you're growing it indoors, or partial sun if you grow it outside.

Hi!

No, this one is not safe for pets. Many plants in the genus Crassula contain saponins. The plant makes saponins as a natural insecticide and fungicide, but they will also sicken larger animals too.

There is just one plant in the pot that's big enough to fill out the 2" pot. They aren't in the form of multiple starts, although it could be divided on arrival.

I have a hanging pot in a small magnolia tree lining my back patio. The hanging pot is more shaded than direct sunlight. Will this plant grow without direct sunlight? See more »

It's worth a shot! They can get a little leggy in deep deep shade, but the indirect radiation of most outdoor shade spots is sufficient for them.

You can trim it back but it sounds like it's not getting enough light. That problem needs to be solved first before you do any trimming or the plant might not have the energy to sprout again.
