Highlights

Crassula 'Baby's Necklace' (Kimnach): A prolific grower with flat, button-like leaves that encase the stems like beads on a string. Its minty green foliage has contrasting pink to red edges that intensify in direct sun. This variety can grow as a ground cover in frost-free areas, but it also looks fantastic trailing from a hanging basket. 'Baby's Necklace' is a hybrid of C. rupestris ssp. marnieriana x C. perforata ssp. kougaensis.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

I’m especially wondering how Baby’s Necklace leaves compare to Ivory Towers. I am looking for the smallest leaves. See more »
2 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Crassula 'Baby's Necklace' easily has the smaller leaves between the two. Its leaves are roughly 3/8" long. Ivory towers are more like 3/4" to 1" long.

There are a couple of Crassula plants that have even smaller leaves. Tom Thumb and especially Crassula rupestris var. monticola have very small leaves!

Aim for the same depth as they were planted in their original grow pots. You want the roots fully covered without burying any of their fleshy leaves. You can see some examples in the transplanting video linked below.

Crassula ovata Jade Plants can cause some digestive issues when consumed, so to be on the conservative side, we do not consider any Crassula to be pet-safe.

What is the difference between this (kougaensis), baby's necklace, and jade necklace? See more »
9 months ago  •  Staff Answer
The differences between these three are mostly about leaf shape and size.

Crassula perforata ssp. kougaensis is distinguished from the other two by its longer leaves as well as its internode length (the space between the pairs of leaves). Because of this longer internode, the stem of this plant is visible more often than the other two.

Crassula 'Baby's Necklace' has the smallest leaves of the three and tends to maintain a bronze coloration.

Crassula 'Jade Necklace', true to its name, maintains much more green in its colors. Its internode length is short, like C. 'Baby's Necklace', but its leaves are a tad larger over all, but especially thicker. Crassula 'Jade Necklace' also has cilia on the margins of the leaves.

Mostly, yes. As Crassula 'Baby's Necklace' matures, it loses its lower leaves to focus on its upper leaves, which get more light. If loss of the lower leaves is the only symptom, then the plant is behaving normally. However, if the stem is mushy underneath the drying leaves, or if you see insect pests, then there may be another issue. For more information on leaf loss, click the link below.

It'd be much easier to pot them all together.
