Highlights

Cliff Cotyledon (Cotyledon pendens) (van Jaarsveld): A unique trailing succulent of pistachio green leaves. Its fleshy, teardrop-shaped leaves have a powdery, glaucous coating and take on bright red margins when grown in direct sunlight. The stems branch freely and can grow into a thick cascade up to 2.0' long. In the wild, it grows hanging from cliff crevices in South Africa where it receives full sun and summer rainfall. This miniature plant has large, bell-shaped blooms striped in coral and white.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.

Some species of Cotyledon have been shown to be mildly toxic to pets. Therefore, we don't include them in our list of pet safe succulents. You can see that list by clicking the link below.

You could, as they're fairly close in care needs. String of Pearls tends to like a bit more frequent water than Cotyledon pendens, but if you use well-draining pots and soil, you could probably keep both plants quite happy.

That [plug] tag just means you get a really tiny plant! It's a whole plant with leaves, stems (if applicable) and roots but it's just much smaller than the 2" pot varieties. It would probably fit in a 1.5" pot, just to put it in perspective, but they ship bare root.

I'll post a video here that explains plugs in more detail.

First, make sure the plant is receiving enough sunlight. An unobstructed south facing window is ideal for indoor growth. Outdoors, think partial sun. Making sure the plant has enough light helps prevent rot by drying the soil and encouraging the plant to use the water it has available.

Be sure your soil and pot are well draining. If your soil is too gritty it may not hold onto water long enough for the plant to drink. Not gritty enough, and you risk rotting the plant. One part potting soil and two parts mineral grit is a great mix. Miracle Gro's succulent mix may seem rich for most succulents, but it's perfect for Cotyledon pendens.

Tweak your watering a little bit, but be careful. Succulents tolerate underwatering very well, but prolonged underwatering can slow down growth and make the leaves appear shriveled. As long as your soil and light are on point, you should be able to increase your watering frequency without much trouble. When you water, be sure to deeply drench the soil until water comes out the pot's drainage holet.

The trailing plants at the link below can tolerate slightly less sun than most succulents. Do note, these are soft / tender succulents and need to be brought indoors if there is any chance of frost.
