Highlights

Chick Charms® Mint Marvel™: A green rosette with contrasting, dark red tips. It is a strong grower and survives cold, wet winters better than most Sempervivum. This variety produces lots of offsets on very short stolons. Also known as S. calcareum 'Sir William Lawrence'.

Hens & Chicks need plenty of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons. These chicks can be left to form tidy clusters or removed to share and transplant.

Sempervivum do most of their growing in the spring and summer, and will thrive with weekly watering and afternoon shade if temperatures exceed 80F. They are incredibly frost hardy and will happily thrive through winter under an insulating blanket of snow. Protect from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.

That sounds like a great idea! Regular trimming of overly dry blooms would do the plant a lot of good.

Received in California. Within a year moved to Indiana? Seemed healthy & enjoyed north light exposure. Growing larger & with many cuttings develop roots. Repotted back into same pot with new soil, but have never fertilized. Had no idea it was a blooming plant. Blooms last for weeks and more keep developing. Same north exposure. Why take so long? Congratulations! Yes, K. blossfeldiana can produce lots of blooms over a long period of time. It's tough to say what change in its environmental conditions prompted it to start flowering, but even without fertilizer, soil contains nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. It's possible that's what spurred it to flower.

K. blossfeldiana can grow indoors year-round. It will maintain its foliage as the blooms come and go. Mature plants tend to reach 12" to 18" tall.

You can! In fact, removing the dead flowers encourages the plant to produce new, fresh flowers.

It's safe to assume that all members of the genus Kalanchoe are mildly toxic, including this one.

This could be due to a lack of light. How do the stems look? Is there a lot of space between the leaves where you can see bare stem? If so, then it's probable that your plant is trying to "reach" for the sun. The lack of sunlight would lead to a lack of energy which would lead to a lack of flowers.

If it's already getting 6+ hours of sunlight a day or the stem isn't so bare, you could try fertilizing it, using a well balanced fertilizer during the seasons it grows the most. You could also try using a fertilizer that is high in phosphorous bi-weekly.

You can cut them back and reroot the cuttings, however, your plant may need more sun. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana gets tall, but not 2'. This unusual size could be the result of the plant stretching to try and find light. Click the link below to read our description of stretching. If this sounds like your plant, it needs access to more light before you cut it down. Otherwise, it may not have the energy to sprout again.

I have a very small kalanchoe blossfeldana that I have planted in Shultz Catcus & Palm bagged soil. I feel like this soil stays too wet, despite only very minimal watering. The plant itself looks ok with a few blooms, but it is very small and hasn't grown much since purchasing. My question is, should I add more of "something" (sand, perilite, etc.) to the soil to help it drain and dry out more easily. Your website with the great pictures has been so wonderful for helping me identify other succulent that I have recently purchased. Thanks for your help.

You're very welcome! We try to be as accurate as possible with our ID.

I looked up some reviews and forums that talk about that particular soil and I find that people have the same suspicion as you do. It holds water too well to be a good succulent soil and people really recommend cutting it with something grittier. Perlite, coarse sand, or pumice should absolutely help. I've also heard of people mixing this soil in a 50/50 ratio with chicken grit or even aquatic plant soil for cactus, but Kalanchoe can take a bit more water so you may not have to be that extreme about it.

However, this may not be the only issue. You could try gradually moving it into more light to encourage growth. Fertilizing is also a possibility. If you go this route, I would recommend using a 1/4 or 1/2 strength fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season in the spring to summer. I hope this all helps!

Hi there!

Do you mean specifically Kalanchoe blossfeldiana plants or all Kalanchoe plants? Regardless, I'll attach a link to this post that should take you to the Kalanchoe page on our website. The current available colors of K. blossfeldiana, at the time of posting, are pink, orange and yellow. However, this is likely to change as availability changes. I hope this helps!
