Highlights

String of Hearts or Rosary Vine (Ceropegia woodii) (Schlechter): A collector's species, this succulent is highly sought after for its trailing stems of heart-shaped leaves. The thin, reddish stems can form dense cascades up to 3.0' long. The sweetheart leaves grow in pairs and have a mottled pattern of white and green. It also has phenomenal, trumpet-shaped flowers of pink and purple. It can develop tubers (underground or aerial) and grows a woody caudex as it matures. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

These are 3.5" plastic pots.

If you're looking at a specific plant on our website, you can scroll down to a section called "PRODUCT DETAILS". On the right side of your screen, under this section, will be a list with a bunch of fast facts about that plant. These will include things like "COLD HARDINESS" and "RECOMMENDED LIGHT CONDITIONS", but it'll also contain a list item called "PRODUCT FORMAT". There it'll tell you what size pot that plant ships in.

A lot of your plants say filtered or partial sun. I’m curious to know how many hours that would be if it is being kept outside. See more »

Partial sun means roughly 4 hours of sunlight a day. Full sun means 6 or more.

how do I propagate this plant string of hearts See more »
1 year ago  •  Staff Answer
String of hearts can be propagated via cuttings. They respond very well to water propagation. Simply cut a string that's roughly 3" in length with a clean knife. Be sure to remove the leaves closest to the cut end. Then dip the cut end into a glass of water and drape the other end over the lip of the glass. Give the cutting plenty of light and, once it forms roots, plant them into well draining soil. They'll appreciate more water at first, just until they develop their bulbs.

We have a general guide on watering succulents, which you can access by clicking the link below.

The unique thing about string of hearts is that it doesn't look very succulent. However, just below the surface of the soil, the plant stores water in tubers and can access it as needed. Only water if the soil is dry and the plant shows signs of thirst. This will mainly look like wrinkly leaves in string of hearts.

That sounds like a good idea if the box is likely to pass through areas that are 40°F or lower.
