Highlights
Ubelmannia pectinifera (Buining): A plum purple columnar cactus with acute, triangular ribs lined with bright white areoles. The areoles sprout long, interlacing spines of dark brown to near black. Its flowers are an interesting mix of yellow and green and emerge from the top of the stem in the spring and summer. Unlike many cacti, this one likes a little more water in the dry summer and prefers humid conditions. This Brazilian species can reach up to 30.0" tall and 6.0" wide at maturity. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.
This variety of cactus will not survive a frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
