Highlights

Pachypodium brevicaule (Baker): Considered by some to be the oddest looking succulent species. It has bulbous, silvery stems that spread outward, but never get more than 6.0" tall. Its tiny branch nubs sprout thin, green leaves that fall off during its winter dormancy and re-sprout in spring. This Madgascar native is adapted to blend in among quartz boulders and grass. It camouflages so well that it is often only spotted when it blooms in summer with bright yellow flowers. There are some individuals growing in the wild that have been alive for centuries, reaching over 3.0' wide.

Please Note: This can be a challenging species to grow and should not be watered during its winter dormancy.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
