Highlights

Pachypodium bispinosum (de Candolle): A rare and spectacular caudiciform with unique blooms. This stemmed succulent is from South Africa and stores water in its swollen trunk. It has silvery bark and grows lots of slender branches. At maturity, its egg-shaped caudex can reach 2.0' tall and 1.0' in diameter. This genus is deciduous, losing its leaves in winter and re-sprouting them in late spring to early summer. Summer also bring the bloom of bell-shaped flowers that are pink on the outside and white within. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot and is currently about 12.0" tall.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
