Highlights

Echinopsis pentlandii var. aculeata (Salm-Dyck ex Dietrich): A variable species of clumping cactus with a fierce cage of spines. The stems are a glaucous green and have 12-15 deeply notched ribs. Woolly, white areoles sprout long, curved spines of yellow to brown. For a few days in spring, it blooms with short, funnelform flowers that open during the day and close at night. Flower color varies greatly, but tends toward magenta with this variety. This species is native to the Andes of Peru and Bolivia.

This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
