Highlights
Snowflake Aloe (Aloe rauhii): The mother of many hybrids, Snowflake is emblematic of the mottled "mosaic" pattern sought by many Aloe enthusiasts. This green and white species tends to have thinner, more narrow leaves. It can tolerate low light conditions, though in bright sun it will flush violet to bronze. Snowflake Aloe stays nice and small in a pot but can develop into mounding clumps as it produces new offsets around its base. The offsets can be removed and transplanted or left to cluster. In winter or spring, the plant can send up a bloom stalk over a foot tall from which dangle coral, bell-shaped flowers that attract pollinators. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" round, plastic container.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
