Agave schidigera - Thread Agave

Agave schidigera - Thread Agave: This species resembles filifera in that is has roughly the same size and shape, and has the same characteristic peeling white threads on the borders of its pointed leaves. It typically doesn’t exceed two and a half feet tall by three feet wide. As it matures, the threads peel off from the leaves and twine around the plant, creating a tinsel-like effect. A. schidigera is solitary; it does not produce offshoots. It is also monocarpic, so it will bloom once and die. Fortunately it only blooms after 10 to 15 years, and it germinates very easily. The flower stalk is large and can reach 10 feet tall.

Fun Fact: Agave schidigera is so similar to Agave filifera that its status as an independent species has been challenged, and some have gone so far as to refer to it as Agave filifera subsp. schidigera! This, in the botany world, is the equivalent to slapping someone with a glove and challenging them to a duel.
