Agave montana - Mountain Agave

Agave montana - Mountain Agave: A recent addition to cultivated collections, this Agave comes from the mountainous regions of Mexico and grows well at high elevation. Montana has squat leaves and marginal spines which culminate in strong, white teeth at the tip. It grows up to five feet tall and up to four feet wide, and stays yellowish-green to dark green but turns reddish prior to blooming. Unlike many Agaves, it does not put out offshoots; instead it grows flower stalks up to twelve feet tall, which produce club-like blooms. It can tolerate colder temperatures than many Agaves, down to 10F.

Fun Fact: As the plant grows, the leaves imprint their toothy silhouettes on each other in a process called “bud printing.”
