Highlights
Agave deserti var. simplex (Gentry): A fierce, compact rosette of sword-like leaves native to the Sonoran Desert. Its pale green leaves have wavy margins and a long, sharp terminal spine. The leaves tend to be marked with pale, silvery banding. It can tolerate frosts down to at least 10F (even lower in dry climates). It is a slow grower and does not produce offsets, which makes it a dependable landscaping plant. At maturity it can reach 2.5' tall and 2.0' wide. This species's name references the Latin word for "solitary", as it often grows in barren habitats. This plant ships as a 1.5" plug.
Agave need plenty of full, outdoor sunlight and great drainage to thrive. They do well in gritty, mineral soils and pots with drainage holes. Over time you'll see new offsets or "pups" sprout up around the base of the mother plant.
Agave grow slowly in the spring and summer and can tolerate high heat and extended drought. This variety is somewhat frost hardy and needs protection from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.
