Highlights

Adenia glauca (Schinz): A rare and unusual caudiciform, i.e. a succulent with a swollen stem. This oddity develops a tremendously wide trunk where it emerges from the soil, but quickly tapers into a narrow stem. It is topped by thin, deeply lobbed leaves that create shade for the stem. Of the exotic plants, A. glauca is only mildly challenging to grow. Like most succulents, they need rapidly draining soil and moderate direct sun. It blooms in spring with small, cream-colored flowers. They thrive with weekly watering during spring leaf growth, but only monthly watering after their leaves drop in fall. They are native to southern Africa where the caudex can reach over 6.0' in diameter despite the entire plant being less than 2.0' tall. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
